Firefox 3.5 Beta 4 Comes with Restore Closed Tabs/Windows Functionality
Apr 27, 2009 Firefox
Mozilla is moving ahead with the development of the next iteration of its open-source browser. But even with Firefox 3.5 Beta 4 just around the corner, Mozilla continues to build new features into the successor of Firefox 3.0. The latest modification to the browser involves the addition of restore closed tabs and windows capabilities to Firefox 3.5 Beta 4. Codename Shiretoko will allow users to open the last three closed tabs and windows in its default configuration. Opening recently closed tabs and windows is an option that Mozilla has built into the History menu.
“I’m happy to announce the landing of Undo Close Window. This adds a menu & keyboard shortcut for reopening your previously closed windows. By default we store 3 windows (though sometimes more due to special cases involving pop-up windows),” revealed Mozilla’s Paul A. O’Shannessy. Handling recently closed windows was a project that debuted initially in Firefox 2.0 via a few APIs, but which failed to materialize. Only in Firefox 3.5 will the feature be fully implemented.
Download Firefox 3.0.9, Get Ready for Firefox 3.5 Beta 4

Firefox 3.0.9 is available for download, with Mozilla hard at work to wrap up Firefox 3.5 Beta 4. On April 21, 2009, Mozilla delivered the latest security and stability update for Firefox 3.0. In this regard, the latest refresh to the open-source browser resolves an issue where Firefox would lose its stored cookies due to a corrupt local database. At the same time, users will be able to now see inline image attachments in emails. Additional issues fixed involve increasing performance when submitting large forms and a problem related to new windows failing to properly come into focus.
“We strongly recommend that all Firefox users upgrade to this latest release. If you already have Firefox 3, you will receive an automated update notification within 24 to 48 hours. This update can also be applied manually by selecting “Check for Updates…” from the Help menu,” revealed Samuel Sidler, Quality Assurance engineer at Mozilla. “If you’re still using Firefox 2.0.0.x, this version is no longer supported and contains known security vulnerabilities. Please upgrade to Firefox 3.”

Firefox 3.1 Beta 3 is finally available for download. The development milestone represents a crucial point in the development of codename Shiretoko, as it is the last breath of Firefox 3.1. Mozilla has already announced the rebranding of Shiretoko from Firefox 3.1 to Firefox 3.5 as the open source browser evolves from Beta 3 to Beta 4 in the development process. Users will need to enjoy Firefox 3.1 Beta 3 as much as they can, since it’s the last they’ll ever see of Firefox 3.1. Ahead of the Beta 4 milestone, Mozilla will completely kill off 3.1, without having actually released the final version of this browser iteration.
“This milestone is focused on testing the core functionality provided by many new features and changes to the platform scheduled for Firefox 3.1,” revealed Mike Beltzner, Mozilla User Experience lead. “Firefox 3.1 Beta 3 is a public preview release intended for developer testing and community feedback. It includes many new features as well as improvements to performance, web compatibility, and speed.”
The new Beta release of Firefox 3.1 essentially paves the way for Firefox 3.5. However, Mozilla will not restart the Beta process from scratch, or from version 1. Instead, the Beta versions will continue to evolve as if they had done naturally. In this context, the upcoming development milestone of the open source browser will be Firefox 3.5 Beta 4. Mozilla estimated that Beta 4 of Firefox 3.5 would be delivered in April 2009.
