Nokia 7100 Supernova Review

Nokia 7100 adds to the Supernova series as an entry-level handset but promises excellent value for money. Targeting emerging markets, the cheap device is intended to attract buyers that are not interested in high-end features or simply don’t have the budget to get themselves a much better mobile phone. Even though it is considered an entry-level handset, you will still have to pay a price that cannot be considered ‘entry-level’, especially on those emerging markets. Nokia 7100 Supernova offers you a way to communicate, limited Internet browsing and poor multimedia features.

Announced in November 2008, Nokia 7100 Supernova was made available on the market in January 2009. The handset can be acquired for about US$100, without any plan, but prices may vary by location and carrier, so chances are that you’ll even get it for up to US$150. The phone is available in three different colors: Jelly red, Fresh blue and Black.

Design

Nokia 7100 Supernova features a basic slide form, pretty slim and small. Even though it’s a low-end phone, the slider doesn’t seem so cheap at first glance. The plastic used for manufacturing is very well polished and shiny, while the back cover is ridgy, and it’s also the only drawback I have found in the construction of the phone, as it seems flimsy and it gives the impression that it’s on the verge of falling down. The back cover is held by a weird switch on top of the phone, which is the only thing that prevents it from falling. On the right side of the slider there’s a dedicated camera button, a charge port, a 2.5mm jack port and a weird USB port.

Windows 8 Major Improvements

Microsoft is gearing up to debut what it referred to as major improvements for Windows 8, designed to take file access in branch offices to the next level. Even if Windows 7 is still in pre-RC stage, with the Escrow for the Win 7 Release Candidate, Build 7077, out the door, Microsoft has already confirmed that it is looking past the next iteration of Windows. The focus on branch office scenarios related to file access simply comes to offer official confirmation that the Redmond company’s strategy for Windows client and server platforms stretches well over Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2, even though the two operating system releases are yet to be finalized.

“For the upcoming version of Windows, new critical features are being worked on including cluster support and support for one way replication. The core engine is also being reworked to provide dramatic performance improvements. We will also soon be starting major improvements for Windows 8 where we will be including innovative features which will revolutionize file access in branch offices,” the Redmond company revealed in a job posting (via ActiveWin).

Download IE8 RTW Language Packs for Vista SP1

Concomitantly with the general availability of Internet Explorer 8 RTW, Microsoft also released to web the IE8 Language Packs. Fact is that the gold version of IE8 RTW is currently available for download in no less than 25 languages, but the software giant has taken it one step further. In addition to the fully localized languages of IE8, the Redmond company is also offering users worldwide the possibility to translate the graphical user interface of IE7′s successor.

“The Internet Explorer 8 Language Packs install language specific resource files, allowing users to view the user interface (UI) of Internet Explorer 8 in a different supported language,” Microsoft informed. Currently users of the following languages will be able to take advantage of the IE8 RTW Language Packs: Arabic, Chinese (Traditional), Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Hong Kong), Czech, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese (Portugal), Portuguese (Brazil), Russian, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish.

The individual language packs are available exclusively for Windows Vista RTM/SP1 and Windows Server 2008. This because users will need to deploy the language packs on top of IE8 RTW running on Vista and Windows Server 2008, but only if the operating system already has matching OS language pack installed. The software giant is offering no less than 50 downloads, as all Language Packs are offered for both the 32-bit and the 64-bit flavors of the Windows client and server platforms.

Web Platform Installer 2.0 Beta for Windows 7, Vista SP1, and XP SP3

The Microsoft Web Platform Installer has evolved this week from version 1.0 to 2.0. In fact, as MIX09 debuted, the Redmond company made available for download the Beta development milestone of Web Platform Installer 2.0. Web Platform Installer 2.0 Beta is only supported on Windows Vista RTM and SP1, Windows XP SP2 and SP3, Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2008. However, the bits also manage to integrate with the next iteration of the Windows operating system, Windows 7. With version 2.0 the software giant aims to take the already simplified download and install process of its collection of web solutions a step further.

“It includes everything that you need to get up and running to build your web solutions – from servers, tools, and technologies, including the most recently updated products. This means you don’t have to go to a different website and download to set up your dev machines or servers! With the WebPI, you can install the entire stack all from one website – www.microsoft.com/web and one installer. Additionally, the WebPI installs the community version of PHP 5.2.9-1 so you have easy integration with popular web applications. All you need is a Windows machine or hosted version of Windows,” revealed Mark Brown, Microsoft senior product manager. Continue reading

New Google Chrome Beta Available for Download

Google has made a new version of its open-source browser available for download, reintroducing the Beta label. Chrome 1.0 itself debuted into Beta in September 2008, and was released to web in December of the past year. “Since we took the “beta” tag off Google Chrome in December, we’ve been updating two release channels: developer and stable. With our latest release, we’re re-introducing the beta channel for some early feedback,” revealed Brian Rakowski, Google Chrome product manager.
